The 'We Can' March, Nepal
The ‘We Can’ march in Nepal has been completed successfully. The march that began on November 4, 2009, culminated on the 11th of the month. The idea behind the march was to bring together three groups who were marching from the eastern, central and western region of the state to lend visibility and support for ‘We Can’.
People from social organisations, NGOs, INGOs, government organisations, municipalities, schools, and the mass media joined in. Change Makers also joined in huge numbers. The three groups toured over 40 districts and came together to disseminate campaign messages through distribution of pamphlets, leaflets, communication material, and the enacting of street plays that highlighted campaign messages.
Change Makers from the state and those participating from India spoke at length at various places and shared their personal journeys of change. The Alliance Members also threw in their support. They took care of the logistics and in some regions more than 30 partners were involved. In Makwanpur district, the police arranged lunch for the team in the arrack! In other areas, Transport Associations provided buses to Change Makers. Other organizations provided banners.
The people welcomed the marchers with garlands and traditional music and school children waved ‘We Can’ banners and flags with enthusiasm. The media, too, gave wide coverage to the event. The march was covered by the national television and daily newspapers. FM radio also broadcast live interviews of the marchers and gave details of the march.
The march would not have been possible without the support of the discrete groups. We take this opportunity to thank each one who helped us –directly and indirectly.
