Vavuniya, Mannar and Anuradhapura Launches

On 2 November 2004, nearly 200 people attended the district launch at Vavuniya, the northern Sri Lankan town that is 240 miles from the capital Colombo.

The district secretary and government agent, K Ganesh, inaugurated the campaign. It was followed by a screening of a documentary about P Kalawathi, a woman who had survived violence. It highlighted her struggles to re-organise her life after separating from her husband.

A pocket calendar for the year 2005 with the campaign logo was released. A selection committee chose six slogans -- three in Tamil and three in Sinhala -- from poster and slogan competitions held in Vavuniya, Mannar and Anuradhrapura. Certificates of recognition were awarded to those individuals whose slogans were selected. All the posters are soon to be complied into a booklet and distributed.

Mannar and Anuradhapura held their launches on 3 and 4 November 2004 respectively. Serious efforts were made to involve male youth groups so that they could influence members of the community and adopt gender-just practices in their own lives. Both launches were attended by over 100 people. Police personnel who attended the launches shared important information about domestic violence in their districts.
