Trincomalee Launch
The launch of the campaign at Trincomalee on 26 October 2004 was attended by over 70 people who pledged unstinting support for its activities. They included representatives of the allies, government officials, army officials, social workers and people from all walks of life. Banners and posters at prominent places like the entry points to the city of Trincomalee, bus terminus and key train junctions were used to announce the launch. More than 500 people had already participated in the six divisional level launches held prior to the district launch between 19 and 21 October 2004.
On the occasion of the Trincomalee launch, A R M. Saifullah, assistant programme coordinator of the Trincomalee field office, outlined the objectives of the campaign and detailed the efforts of the growing campaign alliance.
Jesukumary, the coordinator for gender in Oxfam GB (Trincomalee), elaborated the campaign plans for the country (which was translated into Sinhala) while the plans for the district level was elaborated upon by David, a member of the district action group in Trincomalee.
A district-level perspective of violence against women was presented by the joint director of planning. He highlighted the protection and support available at the district-level for survivors of domestic violence and called upon the organisations involved in the campaign to work in tandem with government departments. He assured the support of the district administration in implementing the campaign.
A senior army officer requested assistance of the alliance in arranging for counselling sessions for female officers and soldiers in the armed forces. Women soldiers, he said, were working under great stress and some of them had even committed suicide.
The video message by President Chandrika Kumaratunga was screened at the launch. It was followed by the screening of the proceedings of the divisional-level launches that highlighted the efforts of the alliance to raise awareness on domestic violence.
