Sumina Pandit: Questioning Values

Eighteen-year-old Sumina Pandit of Makawanpur Multiple College in Kathmandu feels it is important to bring the issue of domestic violence into public discourse as it has been sustained by silence far too long.

“We need to seriously question and raise debate on the current set of beliefs and practices on domestic violence to end it. I have begun talking to girls and women I know and I soon plan to incorporate the messages of the campaign into the events of a youth cultural troupe of which I am a member. I think drama, street plays and songs can be used to raise awareness of the issue and force it into the open. I also plan to organise quiz and essay competitions for children on this issue. At present, there are 55 organisations working in Makawanpur district to address the concerns of women. Their efforts are laudable but we need the cooperation of many others."
