Active Sri Lankan Participation at the Regional Change Maker Assembly in Dhaka, Bangladesh

A group of 23 Change Makers from Sri Lanka eagerly participated in the Annual Change Maker Assembly that was held in Bangladesh from the 22nd – 26th of June 2010. This group consisted of Doctors, Lawyers, Teacher, Government Officials and Students from various districts of Sri Lanka. The objective of this assembly was to share experiences, raise the effect of domestic violence in the society, and built support for the We Can Campaign. In order to do this a variety of activities were put together for approximately 500 participants from 6 different countries in South Asia.

The most talked about activity at this year's assembly was the field visits that were organised on the second day of the event. The Change Makers were divided into groups of fifteen, irrespective of the country they represent to visit different locations. The local Alliances organised orientations in every location. There after, one local and one foreign Change Maker made a pair to visit villages, unions, municipality, upazila and district level at both rural & urban settings. Each pair participated in at least, one community event, one school or college level event, one Change Maker Group meeting and one any other event, selected locally. Besides this, they also met with a number of community people, local government bodies, journalist, cooperatives, micro credit groups, CBOs, youth clubs, Lawyers Associations, cultural groups, trade unions etc. These activities paved the way for a variety of cultures, and ethnic groups to come together for a common cause, share interesting experiences & understand the different approaches taken by the We Can Campaign in Bangladesh.

On the final day of the event back in Dhaka, there were workshops held on topics such as, Role of Change Makers, Alliance Role, Domestic Violence Act & Institutionalisation of the Campaign. The experience and knowledge gained through out this event has triggered the Sri Lankan team to redefine some of their current strategies and create new ones to make the ‘We Can’ Campaign’ an even bigger success in Sri Lanka than it already is.
