Shibshankar Deb Sharma: Recognising the Starting Point of Change

Twenty one-year-old Shibshankar Deb Sharma lives in Kachrapara in West Bengal. He has started a youth group called Youth For Development. “Before I joined the campaign, I felt that girls and women only thought about getting married. But in the course of my involvement with the campaign, I have met many women who think differently and that has been an eye-opener for me. Earlier I felt that it was more important to provide legal support, income and income generation schemes for distressed women. Now I realise women can themselves bring about change in their lives. And, this is really the starting point of change. My sister is being abused by her husband. I am being supportive and helping her take a stand. I think the campaign will help women stand up for their rights.”
