Seema: Fighting Injustice

Seema of Kishanghar, Ajmer, says: “Listen, we fight drunks, Rajputs and anyone that gets in our way. We’re afraid of nobody … instead people are afraid of us (smiling): we have a dangerous reputation, sister. You see, knowledge is empowering … and through the campaign we have become stronger. We can explain to others why violence against women is wrong and, with the help of the material, reach out to those who can’t afford books or are illiterate. I feel strongly about helping other women because I know what it’s like when you feel the whole world is against you … me and my son live with my parents now; but, when I was married, my mother-in-law and husband would both get drunk and torture me. They wouldn’t even let me speak to my father … at one point he’d heard rumours that I’d committed suicide and believed it to be true. Who knows what would’ve happened? Everyday, I’m grateful that I was helped to get out of that situation and today I’m determined to help others in need.”
