Revitalizing 'We Can' in Kabul
A coalition of 400 local organizations initiated a six-year long (2004 –2011) campaign called “ We Can End All Violence Against Women” or more popularly known as the “We Can” in Afghanistan. Nine alliance members from four provinces (Mazar, Parwan, Heraat and Jalalabad) held provincial launches during the 16 days of activism in 2006 and subsequently launched the campaign nationally on 18 July 2007 through a huge public event. Approximately 8,000 Change Makers have been mobilized to date and the intention is to mobilize many more Change Makers in this year and the coming years.
The campaign intends to focus its activities in Kabul and engage with many organisations and Change Makers in the area. The focus will be especially on engaging youth who comprise a quarter of the population. Youth centers, Kabul University and colleges and schools will be targeted to mobilize new Change Makers and strengthen the We Can alliance. Efforts will also be made to revive some of the old Alliance members who are committed and willing to work on the campaign and build their capacities.
Among the alliance members promoting the campaign in Kabul are: Afghan Women Services and Education (AWSE), Education Centre for Women (ECW), All Afghan Women Union (AAWU), Training Human Rights Association for Afghan Women (THRA), Legal and Cultural Services for Afghan Women and Children (LCSAWC) and the New Development Organization in Afghanistan (NDOA). Their recent activities include discussions and workshops to familiarize people with the campaign and its issues. Violence in all its nuances is being highlighted.
Attempts are also being made to develop communication materials for the campaign with a focus on booklets, posters, banners and non conventional communication aids.
