Revathy Rajaram: Finding An Impetus for Change

Thirty four-year-old Revathi Rajaram is from Baruipur in West Bengal. She has been working for a campaign ally for over two years. She is an integral part of the campaign and coordinates events as well as training sessions. “Coming from a conservative South Indian family I was passive and accepting, never questioning or challenging anything for fear of upsetting the status quo. I hold myself largely responsible for this attitude of taking things as they came, as long as they did not affect me personally. After all you are called a ‘good’ ‘nice’ girl only when you accept. I got married at a very young age and now realise that it was the biggest mistake of my life! The campaign has sensitised me to violence. It has made me think of my life and question it. I have learnt to distinguish between love and violence in my relationship. I now live by herself in Santoshpur and I have found peace of mind. I take tough decisions and stands by them. This has translated into a renewed passion and commitment for the work I do. As a trainer myself, I know the value of changing attitudes. Initially I was not sure whether this was possible at all. But little beginnings leave me convinced that change is possible. A young boy who asked me for help to arrange benches at the end of a workshop showed me that gender equality is real and young Muslim girls making use of the space provided to talk about their personal experiences teaches me that change is possible and is indeed happening."
