Ramani: In Control of Her Life
Ramani, Nagulovancha village, Kammam district, says, “I was married when I was thirteen years of age because my parents died early. I have two children. Most of my married life has been spent in trying to get my husband to work and escape his beatings. I have often run away to my maternal home to seek refuge. But I always come back to my husband’s home because I could not stay at my maternal home for too long either. After being in touch with allies of the campaign, I have understood that I can be in control of my life. I have now issued an ultimatum to my husband that I will stay with him only if he finds work and supports us. I even threatened him with divorce. Now he has bought an auto rickshaw and manages an income. Meanwhile, I have decided to continue with my studies and give my tenth grade exams. I go with my children to school. Many in my community ridicule me but I am past caring.”
