Rafiq Zaman Khan: Ruling in Favour of Women’s Rights

Rafiq Zaman Khan belongs to a well respected Khan family and is active member of Swabi Jirga - a traditional community-based institution to settle local disputes. He learnt about ‘We Can’ when the campaign district allies organised Makha (a traditional arrow and bow game) tournament at Swabi in early 2006 to raise campaign issues. Rafiq has always been skeptical of NGOs and about their agendas but he was moved by the messages of ‘We Can’. Having familiarised himself thoroughly with the campaign’s aims and objectives, he has decided not to participate in any jirga where women rights are compromised or women are exchanged to settle disputes -- as the practice of Swara lays down. Rafiq speaks on women’s rights and the issue of violence against women at every public gathering he addresses. He says the campaign has motivated him to do so.
