Putul Minj: Earning Respect

“My life has not been an easy one. After the death of my father, we fell upon very hard times. I was forced to work as a domestic help. The family I worked with treated me very badly and subjected me to long hours of work and physical abuse. I then worked as a casual labourer for a while. I then was married to Bablu Kumar of Jaganathpur. He did not spare me either. He took to abusing me daily. It was at this time that I heard about the campaign. After being sensitised, I was determined not to withstand abuse. I left my husband’s home. I went to my mother’s home with my three children. I now fend for my children and work as a Change Maker for the campaign in my free time. I intervene when girls are harassed and tell them how they can protect themselves and stand up for their rights. My husband has reconciled with us now and treats us with respect and consideration.”
