Pooja Kumari: Exercising Rights

Pooja belongs to a poor dalit family. She grew up believing “she had no rights” but says that “the campaign has opened her eyes to many possibilities.” She says she now understands that she has “as many rights as the others and must learn to exercise them”. She says she has now started to learn to cycle, something she thought would never be possible in her lifetime. She faces a lot of opposition from villagers who frown on her cycling. But she says that this does not faze her now. She has even gained courage to teach three other friends to cycle and they together cycle to their educational institution, where they all teach. She also makes efforts to talk of the campaign to other women and encourages them to know about their rights. Her parents were keen she marry young but she says that now feels strong enough to argue with them and make them understand that she will marry when she is ready.
