Minister of Women Affairs and Leena Alam Join ‘ We Can’

In a significant development, Afghanistan’s Minister of Women Affairs, Ms.Ghzanfar, has joined hands with ‘We Can’, promising to support its messages and activities in the country.

Acclaimed actress and UN ambassador for peace, Leena Alam, also recently joined ‘We Can’. In her own words, she recounts, “I was introduced to the campaign by All Afghan Women Union. For those who are not so familiar with me, let me introduce myself. I am a film actress, producer and have recently been appointed as the Peace Ambassador by the UNAMA Northern Region (2009). My duties are to promote peace to better human lives.

I am very proud to be a Change Maker for ‘We Can’. Women in Afghanistan need to realize that they are part of the society and they need to bring personal change in their lives. They need to know about their personal rights and be able to exercise them without fear or curtailment. Yet I know that they will not be able to do this without the encouragement and support of everyone around them. A campaign like ‘We Can’ will be able to facilitate such change. It can emphasise the need for equality, education, health and political rights. The women in our country have and are facing untold suffering and discrimination. They lack the opportunities for expression and self realization which women in many other countries enjoy. I hope by being part of this campaign I can help women find a niche in society.”
