Medley of Events in Orissa

A medley of events marked the campaign trail over 2008 and 2009. In July 2008, the campaign allies organised a meeting at Red Cross Bhavan for nodal and district partners with a core committee strategy meeting also thrown in.

Another nodal partner meeting was organised on 3 November 2008 and in the period that marks 16 Days of Activism, We Can Orissa launched the 1000 Events. On 27 November 2008, a state Level consultation was held on the Dignity of the Girl Child in partnership with UNFPA.

In December 2008, six nodal level Change Makers assemblies were held in Puri, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Ganjam, Subarnapur and Bhadrak.

In the nodal level assembly organised by an ally of the campaign JEETA at Sharat Chandra Club at Pallahara, Deogarh in Orissa on 26 December 2008, the Collector, Pallahara, the Block Development Officer, the SDJM, the Jail Superintendent, the Zilla Parishad members, members of the media, representatives of NGOs, district partners and Change Makers from Deogarh, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal and Angul districts were present.

Detailed presentations by the speakers on campaign issues were followed by cultural programmes and Change Makers exchanging their experiences at the special 1000 Events function. The people who spoke at the nodal Change Makers assembly included Mrs. Minakshi Panda, Benudhar Pradhan, SEDP, Pallahara, Zilla Parishad member and advocate Chitta Ranjan Pradhan and Jail Superintendent, Pallahara, Akshay Kumar Mohapatra.

Similar events were drum rolled in Puri at a youth hostel on 29 December 2008. The eminent speakers were Anuradha Mohanty, campaign team member, Akshaya Kumar Sahoo, Director of the hostel, and Snehanjali Mohanty, nodal convener, among others. Many Change Makers shared their stories of change and SHG federations, self help cooperatives, NGOs, journalists, cultural clubs, students, youth and health workers pledged support. Local channels -- Aaina and Pratidhwanti – aired campaign messages on the day of the event and promoted the campaign’s album song. The local newspaper Bhaskar also gave space to the campaign and its efforts.

In January 2009, the state Change Makers Assembly was held at Koraput that was marked by cultural events, candle light marches, speeches, display of posters at the venue and workshops.

In February 2009, Districts Partners Meetings were held where the holding of 1000 Events were further strategised and the development of IEC material was discussed.

March 2009 saw the culmination of 1000 Events and the celebrations of the International Women’s Day in all districts.
