Launch in Orissa
The pre-launch activities in Orissa took the shape of inter-college competitions in six districts of Orissa from 15 to 20 November 2004. As young people were the focus of the campaign, students from various colleges were invited to take part in debates, essays, painting and poster competitions and slogan writing sessions. They were involved in strategising, designing and implementing the programmes planned for them. Discussions on the theme of the campaign Equal Relationships Are Violence Free took place in almost all colleges. There was a call for nominations for change makers from among young persons. The media was involved in the exercise right from the beginning.
On 23 November 2004, a state-level show of solidarity for the campaign was organised. Students who did well in debates, essay and painting competitions held earlier were felicitated. Change makers also received recognition and were presented with mementos. A cultural programme that included Bonati, Ghoda nach, Sambhalpuri dance, and a dance performance that synthesised two forms of dance -- Odissi and Chhau -- followed.
The state launch in Bhuvaneswar was followed by cultural activities, advocacy and rallies in 30 districts from 10 to 18 December 2004. The rally had 30 points of contact and the street theatre group of Sambhabana performed at many of these confluence points. The last day of the rally coincided with the international Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Day and a host of people including social activists, ministers, bureaucrats and celebrities gathered on the occasion. The high point of the rally was an oath taking and candle light pledge by a 1,000 people in memory of the 50 million missing women in South Asia.
A youth parliament was held and attended by 300 youths from various parts of the state. It was held on the National Youth Day and the students discussed issues relating to domestic violence. It was inaugurated by former speaker of the Lok Sabha Rabi Ray. Many of the leading politicians listened to the sessions from the visitor’s gallery. This youth parliament debated on the Bill on Domestic Violence pending before the Indian Parliament and expressed their views on it.
