Jyoti Chopker: Fight for Freedom

Jyoti Chopker lives in Kothurna village of district Bhandara in Maharashtra. This 38-year-old women has studied till class seven, is the wife of a farmer and a mother of three girls and a boy. Her world, before she became an active member of ‘We Can’, was limited to house, the agricultural farm and attending meetings of the Mahila Vikash Parishad as husband was not open to her going out of the home. While attending a Parishad meeting, she was introduced to ‘We Can’. She says the campaign familiarised her with the obvious and subtle forms of violence against women and she felt compelled to raise her voice. She has now gathered together the women in her community and they together make efforts to stop violence against women, guarantee them basic rights like food, shelter, health and freedom of movement.
