Javed Shah: Articulating Campaign Messages

Javed Shah is a 37-year-old journalist in district Larkana actively involved in ‘We Can’ in Sindh province. Being the secretary of the local Press Club and a reporter for a number of credible newspapers, he has been able (through his writings) to highlight the negative fall-outs of violence against women in various spheres of life, initiate debates on non-violent ways to resolve conflicts and provide new concepts of masculinity. By keeping a consistent focus on the issue, he has been able to gain public support for the survivors of violence and at-risk women. More significantly, he has been able to bring up the issue of ‘honour’ killing and articulate that it is nothing short of murder. It has resonated positively with the reading public. In a short span, Javed Shah has also successfully managed to mobilise a dedicated group of lawyers who provide legal aid to women experiencing violence and live under the fear of being killed in the name of ‘honour’. He says he is particularly proud of his efforts to protect and resolve the crisis in a young’s couple life. The couple, belonging to two different tribes and married of their free will, was facing threats to their lives by hostile community members. He diffused the tension by talking to both the families and resolving the issue amicably.
