Government Initiatives - Bangladesh

  • The main government department that deals with issues relating to gender-violence is the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs (MWCA). It has three implementing agencies: Department of Women's and Children's Affairs, Jatiya Sangstha and Shishu Academy.
  • There are also assisting bodies like National Advisory Council for the Prevention of Violence against Women; National Council for Women's Development; Parliamentary Standing Committee for MWCA; Department for Women's Affairs and Women in Development (WID) focal points.
  • The government has also set up the Prevention of Violence against Women Cell and the Legal Aid Cell within the Ministry of Women's Affairs to deal with violence against women.
  • A One-Stop Crisis Centre situated at the Dhaka Medical College is meant to provide immediate help to victims of violent attacks.
  • The Government of Bangladesh undertook the National Plan of Action on Women Advancement on the basis of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Beijing Platform for Action (BPFA) in 1998.
  • A number of non government organisations -- National Council for Women's Development (NCWD); Parliamentary Standing Committee for MWCA and Women's Development and Evaluations Committee -- have come together (with the MCWA acting as a focal point) to take it forward.
