Gender Fact File - India

The finding of the 2009 report titled ‘Gendering Human Development Indices: Recasting the Gender Development Index and the Gender Empowerment Measure for India’ produced by UNDP and the Ministry of Women and Child Development is that the gender development index in India has remained lower than the human development index in the last ten years

The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-III) carried out in 29 states (released in 2007) reveals over 37 percent married women in the country are victims of physical or sexual abuse by their husbands. See http://nfhsindia.org/

A report by United Nation Population Fund (2005) says 70 percent of married women between the ages of 15 and 49 suffer domestic violence.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, of 155,553 crimes committed against women in 2005 -- 68,810 were domestic violence cases.

Their statistics show one dowry death every 77 minutes and one case of cruelty by husband and relatives every nine minutes.

A 2006 UNICEF report says 69 million children witness violence within homes in India.
