Forthcoming Events

  • The day 25 November 2005 will be celebrated across Bangladesh as ‘Violence Prevention Day’. Campaign allies plan to put up mammoth, eye-catching campaign posters all over the country to draw attention to the issue of domestic violence. The formation of a 200-km-long inter-district human chain is also being planned to highlight the gravity of the issue. In a show of solidarity the construction workers will hold a massive rally and gather at the Trade Union Centre at Dhaka.
  • Daily events will be planned between 25 November and 11 December 2005 – the period known and observed as the 16-day period of activism across the globe. ‘We Can’ campaign allies plan to reach the campaign message to at least 200,000 people in this period and identify at least 60,000 Change Makers.
  • Asiatic MCC, a social communication agency, is to fund a 26-episode television serial tackling the issue of domestic violence for the campaign. Titled Tusher Agun (a fuel that catches fire), the weekly serial is likely to be aired in April 2006 on the national television channel. Using the format of the popular soap opera, it will in a bold departure question the patriarchal values they reinforce. It will attempt to depict how violence can be perpetuated at different levels -- by an individual, a community or an institution -- and show the extent to which violence has been normalised in the society. Making use of an engrossing story, the questions this serial will raise are: What factors propel violence against women in their own homes? What roles do gender, class, caste, religion and culture play in cases of violence against women? What are its different manifestations? Can we end violence against women? The agency has also volunteered to undertake promotional activities and conduct audience polls to assess audience reactions and observations.
  • A one-and-half hour feature film on domestic violence starring famous film personalities will be also shown on television later this year. Produced by an NGO, Steps toward Development, its screenplay has been written by a well known woman activist and novelist Selina Hussain.
