Dr Snehlata Agarwal: Raising the Issue of Domestic Violence at School

“As the principal of the Girls Senior Higher Secondary School in Barmer, Rajasthan, I realise that I can play a pivotal role and serve as a role model for girls. As I am involved with the campaign, I began to realise the negative consequences of domestic violence on girls and women. I first thought it fit to understand the issue in totality and also bring about changes in my own lifestyle. I realised that by following some cultural and traditional norms unthinkingly I was becoming a victim of perpetuating unequal practices. I, thus, began to first change my own attitudes and practices. I then began talking to my teachers and explaining the reason why change is needed. My teachers have supported me and together we plan to extend the message to the girls at school so that they are sensitive and aware of the inequalities and can find solutions to them on their own.”
