Comics for gender justice

World Comics India (WCI) -- a collective of artists, media persons, social activists who have identified comics as a powerful tool to stimulate social change -- held workshops on the art of using comics to communicate the 'We Can' campaign messages in Kolkatta (September 6-8, 2005) and Ahmedabad (September 14-16, 2005).

The idea was to get together Change Makers, grassroots activists and young people with little formal training in comic illustration and story writing; channelise their voices and stories through the comic art form; and get them to start using the powerful and comic visual communications as a campaign tool.

After this exposure, participants are planning to develop their own little comic books wall posters and take the message of the 'We Can' to many, many more people. The workshop in India was followed by a workshop in Sri Lanka from October 3 to 7, 2005. An interesting facet to this workshop was the concept and the material were pre-tested and feedback gathered from a wide cross section of people.
