Ageela Yasmeen: Mediating for Justice

Aqeela Yasmeen is a school teacher and a women rights’ activist in Akora Khattak village, District Nowshera, North West Frontier Province. She works at the community level to raise awareness among women about their rights and educates small groups on how to address the issue of violence against women using ‘We Can’ materials. Through years of dedicated work in her community, she has developed credibility and respect among her neighbours, particularly the women. They approach her when they need mediation in their family issues because they are confident she will not allow women’s rights to be compromised. Aqeela won tremendous appreciation for playing the role of a young woman who challenges her family’s decision to marry her to a man without her consent at the campaign’s national launch in May 2006.
